A FATHER and son were assaulted in a north Durham town after a boxing event.

It happened at around 11.20pm on Wednesday May 13 after a man and his 17-year old son were attacked and suffered bruising to their faces.

The beatings took place in Consett town centre after an event in the Civic Centre.

They had been in a family group who were followed by a number of men and women as they left.

The unprovoked attack took place as they crossed the car park at the rear of Consett Magistrates Court.

PC Anthony Kelly said the main instigator appeared to be a man in his late teens or early 20s with a distinctive Mohican-style hair cut.

His head was shaved on both sides leaving a brown strip of hair running across the top of his head and coming to a point at the back.

He was about 5ft 11ins tall and wearing a blue Henley t-shirt and light coloured tracksuit bottoms.

PC Kelly said: "It is believed both groups had been watching the boxing. The man with the Mohican haircut had been asked to keep quiet by the referee during one bout.

"The injured father had also asked him to keep the noise down."

Other people involved included a man about 5ft 2ins tall with short fair hair and wearing a salmon-coloured hooded top and a woman with short dark hair, wearing a black bomber jacket.

PC Kelly said the assault ended before police arrived but CCTV showed a man did get involved in splitting the groups up and officers would specifically like to speak to him.

Anyone with information about the incident or who can help with police inquiries should ring 0345-60-60-365 for the attention of PC Kelly or they can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
