Middlesbrough went down 2-1 at West Ham, with Gary O'Neil scoring for the Teessiders.
Despite losing 3-2 at home to Chelsea, Sunderland avoided relegation thanks to other results.
In the other crucial match at the bottom, Hull finished fourth bottom after losing 1-0 at home to an under-strength Manchester United side.
