THE team sheet for a cricket match this weekend will make interesting reading – with one side all having the same surname.

Members of the Lerigo family are travelling from all over the country to take part in the charity match against Barningham Cricket Club, near Barnard Castle, County Durham.

The money raised from the match, which takes place at Barningham tomorrow, at 3pm, will be split between Cancer Research and the cricket club, which is hoping to install a new electronic scoreboard next to the pavilion.

“The cricket club played a large part in my life,” said Bill Lerigo, who lives in Richmond, North Yorkshire, but spent 24 years in Barningham from 1960.

“When I retired, my six sons all started playing, and at one time there would have been two or three Lerigos playing in the same Barningham team.”

One of Mr Lerigo’s sons, Steven, went on to play for the Yorkshire youth side before going to work at Lord’s. It was Steven, who now lives in Hertfordshire, who organised the event.

As well as Bill Lerigo’s six sons, there will be five of his grandchildren playing in the 18 eight-ball-over match.

“The youngest will be 16 and the oldest will be 55,”

said Mr Lerigo, 78.

“I will be the 12th man and the manager.”

Ian Rutherford, fixtures secretary for Barningham Cricket Club, said: “It should be a great event. It is a wonderful place to play because it is right on the Durham- North Yorkshire border, so you can hit a six from one county to another.”

Entrance to the cricket match is free, and there will be a raffle and a silent auction featuring, among other items, a signed Tottenham Hotspur shirt.

There will also be a race night tomorrow, from 7.45pm, at the A66 Motel, near Newsham.
