RESIDENTS in Eldon have received a cash boost towards creating a welcoming gateway into their village.
The County Durham Environment Trust (CDENT) granted £5,000 to the Eldon Community Partnership for the feature, which includes an improved community space, at the entrance of the village.
The partnership, which was formed by a group of residents to improve the ageing village, is working on the project with Groundwork West Durham.
Plans include new village signage, plants, and a seating area.
Partnership chairman George Pennington welcomed news of the grant, and said the village often goes unrecognised.
He encouraged people to get involved with the partnership’s other projects aimed at improving the village’s environment.
Stephen Armstrong, programme manager with Groundwork, added: "We are thrilled that CDENT are contributing to this project, and have recognised the group’s hard work."
The work is expected be completed within the next six months.
Meanwhile, construction work on the new community hall in Eldon is due to finish within the next few weeks.
