GARDENERS have been devastated by a spate of break-ins at allotments over the past fortnight.
Burglars have targeted 25 plots near Stanley, County Durham. Padlocks and chains were removed using bolt-cutters, by thieves who have stolen tools and equipment.
An allotment spokesman said: “People come up here to feel the great achievement of planting seeds in compost, watching them grow and nurturing them. Then someone comes along and this happens.
People lose heart.
“It is so depressing and really gets to you.”
The break-ins tend to happen late at night on weekends.
Police have arranged for shed alarms to be fitted and hope to set up an Allotment Watch scheme.
