A CITIZENS Advice bureau is launching a new free service to try to stem the rising tide of debt problems.
Chester-le-Street Citizens Advice Bureau has appointed a trained Money Guide who will give face to face information and clear guidance on things such as mortgages, insurance, pensions, savings and budgeting.
The Moneymadeclear service is a new addition to the work of the bureau.
Statistics released by Citizens Advice show a 20 per cent increase in debt issues in the region when comparing April to December 2007 with the same period in 2008.
The service is designed to stop the figure from rising by giving consumers the knowledge they need to avoid debt and to empower them to plan for the future effectively.
Kate Burrows, the Money Guide for Chester-le-Street CAB said: "Many people have questions they would like to ask about how to manage their money - this could be about savings, mortgages, insurance or budgeting.
" Up until now advice on these issues was all too often tied to the selling of products or too expensive for people to afford.
"Trained and approachable Money Guides in the CAB will be able to offer free and impartial guidance to people to help them take the next steps in managing their finances. It's easy to make a quick appointment - give us a call."
Appointments are available by calling Ms Burrows on 0191-389 3001 or 07800 773917.
