THREE members of staff at a North-East school have been suspended.

An internal investigation has been launched at Harrow Gate Primary School, Stockton, but the names of the staff involved have not been disclosed.

Stockton Council chiefs have brought in a small team of specialists to ensure the top performing school operates as usual.

Jane Humphreys, Stockton Council's corporate director of children, education and social care, refused to confirm the names of those suspended.

She said: "We cannot discuss matters involving individual members of staff but can confirm that some temporary changes to the management of the school have taken place to ensure its continued success. We met with parents on Tuesday to discuss these. An internal investigation is currently in progress following the receipt of some information relating to the management of the school.

"As a result, the governors have taken the decision to suspend three members of the senior management team at the school until further notice. This action is entirely without prejudice and follows established procedures which allow investigations to take place fairly and objectively. As an interim measure, the council is supporting the school by making two very experienced members of our Primary Advisory team available to the school until the investigation is concluded.

"We are all working hard to ensure continuity of provision for the children. The SATs tests have been taking place this week and we have already said we are providing experienced staff from our Primary Advisory team. One of these will be supporting the Year 6 classes."

Stockton Council's Primary Advisory team, which is made up of former teachers and headteachers, is working in the school during the investigation.

Councillor Alex Cunningham, Stockton Council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: "I have every confidence in the staff and the local authority team at the school and believe their professionalism will ensure the high standards and wellbeing of the pupils continues here."
