BRAVE globetrotting Girl Guides are set to defy the swine flu outbreak as they gear up for a trip to Mexico.

The 1st Kirkby Hill Girl Guides, of North Yorkshire, aimed to head off to Central America for a trip in August.

The group from near to Boroughbridge were to travel to the World Guide Centre of Our Cabana, in Cuernavaca, to work with the locals.

But the group are now waiting on Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) information to see if the trip is to be scrapped.

Jill Heyes, of Girlguiding North East England, said: "There has been swine flu in Mexico and they will have to go through Mexico City to get to the camp.

"In the area they are going to there is not a problem with swine flu and as they are not going until August there could be a completely different scenario then.

"They need to continue with the fundraising as they are not sure yet if they are going or not and they’re waiting on the FCO."

While staying in Our Cabana the girls, aged 13-15-years, will work on a project with the Vermont Associates for Mexican Opportunity and Support.

This is a non-profit making charity which aims to help the Mexican poor either by feeding or with educational work.

Girlguiding UK said: "The FCO has been advising against all but essential travel to Mexico.

"Groups travelling in the immediate future should contact their travel company/airline and their insurance company.

"Groups that are due to travel to Mexico in the near future should continue to monitor Foreign Office travel advice which can be found at www.fco.gov.uk.

"Groups planning to travel later in the year have been advised to continue to monitor the situation carefully."
