AN anonymous artist has opened his eclectic portfolio for public viewing at Bishop Auckland Town Hall.

The images span four decades - the 1970s to present day - and have been inspired by nature, science fiction, and primitive culture.

The exhibition, entitled Nemo, the Unknown Eclectic, features paintings, intricate drawings, sketches, and even course work from the artist’s schooldays in the 1970s.

The artist wishes to remain anonymous to enable visitors to judge each piece of artwork on its own merit, but hopes visitors will leave feedback in a comments book at the exhibition.

Centre manager Catherine Dawson said: "He is not a professional artist, but wants to get comments on his work.

"He want to stay anonymous because he feels that if people know who he is, they may have preconceptions to his work.

"Many pieces have been displayed in his family and friends’ houses, and look very professional."

The exhibition runs in the McGuinness Gallery until Saturday, May 23 and entry is free.

Opening hours are Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm, and Saturday 9am to 4pm.
