POTENTIAL sailors can find out about taking up sailing with an open day being held by a club in North Yorkshire.
The Thornton Steward Sailing Club is running the event to show off the skills needed and the fun to be had on the water.
The group will also encourage visitors to take to the water to try out sailing on the day at Thornton Steward Reservoir between Bedale and Leyburn.
Due to the facilities being limited at the club the opportunity to take to the water at the open day on Sunday, May 17, may be dependent on demand.
Ken Gibson, of Thornton Steward Sailing Club, said: "People often see sailing boats out on the water and dream of having a go but never do because they don't know how to get started.
"We're hoping our open day will help people overcome those first few obstacles and perhaps encourage one or two to take their first steps into a thoroughly rewarding sport.
"Sailing is something the whole family can enjoy together and we would be delighted to see a few new faces at the club."
The Thornton Steward Sailing Club hosts recreational sailing as well as competitions for sailors of all abilities.
A family week is held where members camp on the reservoir’s banks and take to the water during the day in August.
Yorkshire Water, which owns the reservoir is supporting the open day.
Geoff Lomas, Yorkshire Water catchment and recreation manager, said: "One of our long-term aims is to encourage more people to make the most of all the opportunities we offer."
