THE streets of a town have been brought to life with a colourful procession to mark the Sikh new year.
About 2,000 people walked from the Sikh Temple in Lorne Street, Middlesbrough, to the Centre Square yesterday morning.
The parade, known as Nagar Kirtan, was the first to be held in the town since the Sikh community and temple were established in the town 50 years ago.
The procession included a decorative float holding the Sikh holy book the Guru Granth Sahib, together with drummers and priests singing hymns.
Mayor Ray Mallon met the procession at the civic square and following his welcome address there was a demonstration of gatka, a type of Sikh martial arts.
