A KURLING club scored a double victory in the sport’s world championship.
The Wear Valley New Age Kurling Club, based in County Durham, emerged victorious in the singles and doubles events at the New Age Kurling world championship in Liverpool.
Club member Daniel Bainbridge, 21, won the singles event, followed by fellow members Ken Thomas in second place, Bob Jackson in third, and Allan Gregson in fourth.
Mr Jackson and Mr Gregson scooped gold in the doubles event.
Eight Wear Valley players aged from 20 to the late 50s attended the event, fighting off competition from 15 other UK teams.
They received a £4,000 grant from County Durham Foundation’s Sport Relief and Community Action fund to take part.
Club chairman Steven Bainbridge expressed his pride at the team’s achievements and said: "I knew we would win something, but did not expect that amount of success. I’m so pleased."
Barbara Gubbins, Chief Executive of County Durham Foundation, added: "We are delighted to hear of Wear Valley Kurling’s fantastic achievement. Hopefully it will encourage even more people to take up the sport."
The club meets weekly at Leeholme, near Bishop Auckland, and some members are blind.
