FIRE crews will be doing their bit this weekend to raise money for a little girl who lost her hands to meningitis.
Retained firefighters from Durham Fire Station will be at Sainsbury’s on the Arnison Retail Park, in Durham City on Saturday, from 9am, offering free fire safety advice to the public.
During the day, they will also be raising money for Tilly Lockey, the three-year-old from Tow Law who contracted meningitis in January last year.
Parents Adam and Sarah are now raising money to buy their daughter the best prosthetic hands available, at a cost of £24,000 per pair. The family estimates it will cost £400,000 to give Tilly hands until she reaches the age of 18.
In January, the toddler had her first set of myo-electronic hands fitted, which respond to her muscles and enable her to do things she would struggle with before.
Mrs Lockey said: "She can play in a play park now; she doesn’t have to stand watching other kids enjoying themselves."
Firefighter Ian Peverall who will be part of the crew outside of Sainsburys added: "We would love for anyone who can, to come along to give us their support or make a donation, however small, so we can help Tilly on her way to leading a normal life".
