A NEW wall hanging that hooks up images of County Durham is about to make its official debut. Hooky and proggy mat makers from Durham Clayport Matters will exhibit the metre-square hanging at Durham County Council’s Clayport Library on June 1 and Bowburn Community Centre on June 3.
The outline design of the hanging is based on the rose window of Durham Cathedral and includes views of the county, its people, history, countryside and life at home, work and play.
Durham Clayport Matters was set up after members completed a traditional mat-making course at Clayport Library.
Keen to enhance their new-found skills, they decided to keep on meeting.
They use traditional mat making techniques, enhanced by new ideas and a variety of new and recycled materials.
Funding for the wall hanging came from an Awards for All Lottery grant which was used for materials and equipment, demonstrations, taster sessions and work with community groups in the area to ensure the tradition continues.
The wall hanging will be on show at Clayport Library from 10.30am to 2.30pm on June 1 and at Bowburn Community Centre from 10.30am to 2.30pm on June 3 to celebrate its completion.
