HOUSEHOLDERS are being warned to be on their guard following a spate of distraction burglaries.
The first incident took place in New Road, Billingham, at around 10am on Thursday morning when three men claiming to be from the electricity board managed to talk their way into the home of a 93-year-old woman. Once inside of her home, the men stole cash from her purse then left.
On the same day, the second incident took place in Annandale Crescent in Hartlepool when a man, again claiming to be from the electricity board, talked his way into the home of a 72-year-old man and stole cash.
Police have linked the two incidents, and also believe them to be linked to several other distraction burglaries across the North-East on Thursday.
PC Ingrid Wolfe, regional operation Strongbow co-ordinator said: "We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen something suspicious in either Hartlepool or Billingham.
"People need to be aware that these offenders tend to call at properties posing as officials, whether it be from electric or other utility companies.
"The key message is don't let anyone into your home unless you are 100 per cent sure about who they are. If in doubt or you feel threatened, then do not hesitate to call the police."
Anyone with information on these incidents or similar incidents can contact Cleveland Police on 01642-326326 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
