THE Archbishop of York has helped a local church to mark the centenary of worship there with a special visit.
Dr John Sentamu visited All Saints Church, East Cowton, near Darlington, last Sunday (apr 26) to lead the service.
The church was founded in February 1909 when a memorial stone was laid and the first service was held there in February 1910.
The congregation has a year long series of events lined up to mark the anniversary stating with the visit by the Archbishop.
Jean Dennis, who writes for the parish magazine, said: "We were very honoured that he came to visit and he’s a lovely man.
"He first visited East Cowton Primary School to open a new classroom extension and play area and he led a worship service for a new cross there.
"Then he led a procession to the church where he led the service and his sermon charged us to bring a friend to worship.
"We had a very good day and he was really friendly and he chatted to anyone who spoke to him."
The church was full for the service and it was televised to people at the rear of the building and those outside
