The Spanish government has confirmed a case of swine flu in a victim who has not visited Mexico - the first person to be infected outside North America.
Officials said the victim had, however, been in contact with someone who had recently returned from Mexico.
There are now five confirmed cases of the virus in the UK.
A child who died in Texas is understood to have been Mexican.
