NO DECISION has been taken on whether or not flights from Newcastle to Mexico will go-ahead next week, despite the dangers posed by swine flu.

Officials at Newcastle Airport said the planned Thomson flight to Cancun had not been cancelled.

Yet it seems almost inconceivable that the flight will go ahead.

Thomson has already axed holiday flights from other UK airports and is planning to bring Britons already in Mexico home as soon as possible.

Experts believe there is almost no chance of the swine flu epidemic being under control by next week.

Although Cancun is nowhere near Mexico City – the epicentre of the outbreak – official Government advice is not to travel unless your trip is essential.

An airport spokesman said: “The status of Thomson’s flights to Cancun from tomorrow onwards, including their planned departure from Newcastle International Airport on Monday May 4, are currently under discussion and a decision is expected later today.”

Passengers with queries or concerns are advised to contact their tour operator for information and advice.  Thomson have a dedicated helpline number for customers on 0871 231 5704.    The airport continues to take advice from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and will take immediate action if official travel and health advice changes.

Passengers returning from a visit to an affected area are advised to monitor their health closely for seven days. If during this period they develop a feverish illness accompanied by one or more of a cough, sore throat, headache or muscle aches, they should stay at home and contact their GP by phone or seek advice from NHS Direct (0845 4647).
