A LEISURE centre has won a prestigious design prize.
The £12.3m Freeman’s Quay complex, which opened to the public on Freeman’s Place, in Durham, last July, won the design and innovation award at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors North-East renaissance awards.
The facility was designed by architects WM Saunders Partnership and paid for by the Durham Villages Regeneration Company, then a partnership between the now-defunct Durham City Council and builders Keepmoat.
Nigel Dodds, from Durham County Council’s sport and leisure service, said: "I am absolutely delighted with this award and feel sure more will follow.
"It is easy to look at Freeman’s Quay and admire its striking beauty but we must not forget it also hosts many of the very latest environmentally friendly building techniques and materials and that makes it very special."
The renaissance awards were held in Newcastle Civic Centre on Friday, April 24.
