THE first of a new set of community forums has been named with a little inspiration from Government cabinet minister Hazel Blears.

Durham County Council has established 14 Area Action Partnerships (AAP) to give communities across County Durham a link with the newly formed unitary authority.

The communities secretary was a special guest at the inaugural meeting of the Ferryhill and Chilton AAP Forum at Ferryhill Leisure Centre on August 15.

Her suggestion of 4 Together - reflecting the four main settlements of Ferryhill, Chilton, Cornforth and Bishop Middleham represented by the group- was the most popular of the night.

Five priorities for action were set as: *environment- including street cleaning and open spaces *public transport *community spirit and aspirations *activities for children and young people *health and lifestyle choices.

Durham County Council leader, Simon Henig, said: "The level of support and the enthusiasm of those taking part certainly augurs well for the future.

"Hazel Blears played an active role in the evening’s agenda.

"She showed a genuine interest in the innovative role of the AAPs and the way in which they will give people more say in the services they receive.

"The fact that she suggested the winning name for the first Partnership showed she really got into the mood of the night."

The next step will be the selection of 21 AAP board members- seven members of the public, councillors and representatives of partner organisations- by the end of May to meet at least six times a year to take action on community issues.
