A PUB has lost a planning appeal to build a function hall because the proposed extension would harm the surrounding historic landscape.
The former Sedgefield Borough Council has refused planning permission for the erection of a function hall and reception area behind Bobby Shafto’s pub, in Spennymoor.
Councillors felt that the building would detract from the character and appearance of its Whitworth Park conservation area and historic parkland setting.
An appeal against the decision made by the pub company to the Planning Inspectorate has been dismissed.
The inspector recognised the commercial advantages of the scheme but felt the conservation area would not be preserved because the building’s design was ‘barrack like’, would be crammed between the pub and the historic walled garden.
Andrew Farnie, development control manager at the new Durham County Council which replaced the borough council, said planning officers and pub bosses are now in talks about a new proposal.
