A QUIET moorland village will be transformed this summer when athletes and fun-runners alike descend on it.
The annual Egton Road Race will be held on June 7 and comprises a 10km run and a two-mile fun run.
The event is now in its eighth year, and was first organised to raise funds to save the village’s picturesque St Hilda’s Chapel from demolition.
It immediately attracted 40 runners of all ages and levels of fitness and was such a success that the race has been repeated every summer since, with the numbers of the runners growing along the way. People from the village - near Whitby - turn out in force to marshal or simply cheer runners along on the day.
Local businesses also support the event and have given generous donations every year to set it up.
The fun run covers a gentle two miles and sets off at 10.30am, while the full 10km course begins at 11.30am. For an entry form or further information email; hilary_phenix@hotmail.com or download a form from Loftus Athletic’s website, www.loftus-ac.co.uk
