HEALTH workers in north Durham are taking part in a walk to work scheme this week.

It was launched yesterday (mon) at The Greenhouse at Annfield Plain, near Stanley, and runs until Friday.

The project has been organised by the national charity Living Streets following the success of a series of events last year.

Walk to Work Week aims to raise awareness of the benefits of walking and encouraging the nation to fit more of it into everyday life.

Dave Allen, obesity and physical activity strategic lead for NHS County Durham, said: "Walking is suitable for people of all ages and abilities. "Walking regularly can help you sleep better, manage your weight, reduce blood pressure and stress.

"Walks are also a great chance to meet other people and enjoy fresh air and some free, gentle exercise."

Other events taking place during the week are lunchtime walks from the Greenhouse at Derwentside and from John Snow House, Durham.

Anyone wishing to take part should contact Dave Allen for the Derwentside walks on 01207-523-603 or Vicky Waterson on 0191-374-4174 for the Durham walks.
