A CONVICTED child molester who gave a false name to join a hockey club has been jailed for breaching guidelines to prevent him striking again.

Andrew Gill used the surname White to enrol at the Teesside sports club, and failed to tell officials about his conviction for indecently assaulting a girl under 14.

The 24-year-old also started a relationship with a single mother – having unsupervised contact with her child and brother – without revealing his sordid past.

Gill pleaded guilty to twice breaching his sexual offences prevention order and one charge of failing to comply with notification requirements by using the false name.

Judge George Moorhouse jailed him for three months at Teesside Crown Court after he told him: “It seems to me that you have a total disregard for court orders.

“You are going to have to be punished for it so the message goes out loud and clear to others that if they do not comply or give false names, they go to prison.”

The court heard that Gill, of Lovaine Street, Middlesbrough, flouted the order – imposed for three indecent assaults in 2004 – four times in 2006. The latest offences were committed last year.

Paul Newcombe, in mitigation, said the breaches were the result of “naivety rather than deviousness”, and said Gill was not a typical predatory paedophile.

He said: “He is 24 years of age and does not present like the vast majority of sex offenders who come before the court, who weedle their way into families with the ultimate objective of getting a child.

“There are cases where a paedophile will strike up a relationship with a woman with the target of getting to a child.

“He is looking to start relationships with females of the same age.

“It is difficult for him to be up front about his past with these women. He has got the modern version of the scarlet letter on him. He is not a serial offender out to repeat his original offence.

“He is not a 50-year-old seeking out families and seeking out children. He is a young man in his 20s, finding it embarrassing to be truthful because it would mean one thing – that will be the end of that.”

He said Gill gave a false name because he owed money to a different hockey club, and there was no suggestion of improper conduct.
