PERSONNEL at an RAF base in the region prepared in style for their deployment in Afghanistan by rubbing shoulders with an acclaimed actor.

Ray Winstone, star of Quadrophenia and Sexy Beast, gave a speech at a pre-deployment dinner for personnel at RAF Leeming, North Yorkshire.

The star of film and television, who is well known for his role as Henry VIII, spent an afternoon visiting sections at the station, meeting personnel from 2 Force Protection Wing and 34 Squadron, RAF Regiment.

He took the chance to look around the Hawk aircraft of 100 Squadron, as well as having a hands-on look at the kit that will be used by RAF personnel in Afghanistan.

In the evening, Mr Winstone was the guest of honour at the traditional pre-deployment dinner in the officers’ mess.

Normally used to mixing with the stars on the red carpet, Mr Winstone was more than happy to mix with Station personnel and sign autographs.

He said: "These are our boys, and I’m an Englishman.

"Whatever you think of the politics, these are our boys, and it’s quite an honour to have been invited. "I’ve been meeting kids whose vocation is to fight for their country and for what they believe in.

"It’s about seeing them off and having a good drink with them and to be part of that, is again and honour.

"It’s been blinding."

Wing Commander Shaun Ryles, commanding officer of 2 Force Protection Wing, who invited Mr Winstone to the station, said: "His support has helped me show the guys how much their contribution is valued by wider society.

"He had no hesitation in coming up here and giving up his own time to support us.

"He was an instant hit with the lads."
