A COUNCIL is applying for £2.5m from the Government to improve road networks around three new housing developments.
Durham County Council hopes to receive funds from the Community Infrastructure Fund which is for transport projects supporting residential development.
The council would spend the cash on proposed improvements at Peterlee, Spennymoor and Coundon and after an has been invited to submit full details so the Government can make a decision on funding.
The schemes include two new roundabouts to the south and east of Coundon; improved access for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to the Merrington Industrial Estate, near Spennymoor; and improvements to the A19 junction at Burnhope Way, Peterlee.
Coun Neil Foster, cabinet member for economic regeneration at Durham County Council, said: "Good road links are vital for the development of new housing and successful regeneration.
"This funding would enable us to provide the road networks needed for housing schemes in Peterlee, Spennymoor and Coundon, enabling people to access work and leisure opportunities.
"We are delighted that the Government has chosen these schemes to be among those across the country that have been earmarked for funding."
A decision on whether the funding has been granted is expected later in the year.
