POLICE have charged a man with resisting arrest after firearms officers used a taser gun following an hour-long stand-off in a village near Darlington.

Officers were called to domestic incident in the Emerson Road area of Hurworth shortly after 6pm on Tuesday.

Firearms officers were called because police believed the suspect may have had access to weapons.

Police cordoned the area and arrested a 42-year-old man an hour later, using the taser gun.

A spokesman for Durham Police said: "Police were called to an address in the Emerson Road area of Hurworth shortly after 6pm on Tuesday following reports of a domestic incident.

"As there were concerns about the suspect's possible access to weapons, including firearms, authority was given for police firearms officers to attend.

"A containment operation was put in place around the area and about an hour later a 42-year-old man was arrested.

"He initially refused to comply with the instructions of the police and officers had to discharge a Taser gun; the suspect suffered no ill-effects as a result."

The man was charged with resisting arrest today and has been bailed to appear before Darlington Magistrates Court next month.
