A SUPERMARKET has shown its support for a women-only event that raises vital funds for a cancer charity by unveiling the world’s largest trainer.
Tesco commissioned the size 454 trainer, which has made the Guinness Book of Records, to encourage women to take part in Cancer Research UK’s 5km Race for Life series, which will take place this summer at nine venues in the region.
The trainer, which took the team behind the sets for Dr Who and Torchwood three months and 840 man hours to build, was at the supermarket’s store in Kingston Park, Newcastle, yesterday to help raise awareness.
The trainer, which weighs about 150kg and has an 18- metre lace, is touring the UK, collecting signatures and donations from customers and staff.
It is estimated a person with size 454 feet would be 26.7 metres tall with a stride of 11 metres.
There are still places for Race for Life events in Sunderland on May 10, Hartlepool on June 7, Darlington on June 14 and Durham on July 5. To enter, visit raceforlife.org or call 0871-641-2282.
