A HALF a million pounds arts resource is to be created in a town leisure centre where there were hopes to build a £3m scheme.
The former Sedgefield Borough Council had hoped to work with Durham County Council to create a major arts facility combining the town library at Spennymoor Leisure Centre.
But the plan was put on hold because of local government organisation.
Arts officers have confirmed that the arts resource will still be developed with work expected to start on a £500,000 scheme in September.
It will include a theatre, cinema and studio space, a foyer that can be used as a gallery, workshop room, dance studio and cafe and should be complete by next January.
Arts development officer Katherine Banner said the wider scheme could still go ahead should the new council reconsider the plan.
The arts facility is just one of a series of developments at the centre including a new fitness suite and improved boxing academy and tae kwondo club facilities.
