COMPETITORS are being sought for a new two-day fell race in the Yorkshire Dales this autumn.

The event in the hills above Wensleydale is believed to be the first of its kind to be held in the dale and will consist of two circular routes run over the weekend of October 3 and 4.

The first day course will be around 11 miles to the north of Hawes and the second 15 miles to the south and west of the town.

The idea is the brainchild of Hawes restaurant owner and keen runner Mark Owens, who said: "As far as I’m aware this is the first fell race to be held in Upper Wensleydale - it is certainly the first two-day race - and the aim is to make it a significant event which runners will return to year after year."

Details of the entry fee and prize pot have yet to be released but Mr Owens predicted the overall champion would receive a prize of substantial value and altogether there will be over 30 prizes in ten different categories.

"With such an attractive prize pool and categories where everyone can be competitive we are hoping to attract an international and diverse field," said Mr Owens.

The entry fee will include free on-site camping for three nights with facilities, such as showers and toilets available. An event catering tent will offer a range of hot and cold food.

The event also aims to raise cash for local charities, including the Great North and Yorkshire air ambulances and Dales mountain rescuers.

Mr Owens said: "Not only is this going to be a great fell race, it will be a tremendously fun weekend in the Dales for both competitors and supporters. I believe this is just the sort of event that is needed in the Dales boost the visitor experience, from which the whole community will benefit."
