HOLIDAYMAKERS are being urged to protect their property while they are away after police noticed an increase in burglaries.
Officers say there has been a small increase in house break-ins across the Consett area over recent weeks.
Detective Sergeant Paul Gray, of Consett CID, said: "Obviously people want to go on holiday to relax and enjoy themselves and a bit of forethought about home security before they go will help give them peace of mind while they are away and help ensure they don’t return to heartache."
DS Gray suggested that householders might want to invest in light timer switches, which are often used in winter but can deter summer burglars.
He added: "There has been a slight increase in the number of house burglaries in recent weeks and householders, in particular those going away and leaving their premises unoccupied, should take precautions to protect their homes and property."
