COUNCILLORS have approved plans to build housing on the site of a former social club in north Durham.
A scheme to develop 18 houses on land formerly occupied by Pelton Fell Workingmen’s Club has been backed by the northern area planning committee of Durham County Council.
The authority had received two letters objection from people who live in the area of Chester-le-Street who feel it is becoming overcrowded.
They also feel it will lead to an increase in traffic, exacerbate parking problems and jeopardise road safety.
But the scheme received supported after planning officers advised the committee to give it the go ahead.
A report submitted to the committee said: "It comprises development on previously developed land within the settlement boundary of Pelton Fell, accessible to public transport, close to Chester-le-Street unemployment opportunities and in character with the appearance of the area."
