A STRIKING piece of public art has been lifted into place to finish of the multi-million pound revamp of Thornaby town centre.

The distinctive Unity Sphere sculpture draws on a history of symbolism in which the sphere has become a powerful expression of unity.

The sculpture, measuring 3.4m diameter, is constructed from 175 blown metal triangular forms in mirror polished stainless steel.

Artist Stephen Newby said: "The Sphere is intended to reflect the spirit of Thornaby's regeneration - a community reconnected and strengthened, looking to its future while also celebrating its proud industrial past."

The £30 million revamp of the town's shopping centre will be officially opened next Saturday.
