AMBITIOUS plans to rejuvenate parkland could include an outdoor events arena and the North-East's first cycling velodrome.

Redcar and Cleveland Council has drawn up innovative proposals for The Great Park on the site of the Eston Recreation Ground, near Middlesbrough, as part of its Greater Eston Masterplan.

The Council's Cabinet has commissioned a delivery framework, entitled A New Perspective., which would "transform" the area.

Ideas also include villa-style homes overlooking the area, a new facility building, with cafe, changing rooms and meeting rooms and a pensioners' park area.

The Velodrome concept follows British Cycling's search for a facility in the North East and the Council is keen to "further explore" the idea as part of the delivery framework.

Councillor Sheelagh Clarke, the council's cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said: "As part of our Love It Hate It consultation last year, we had great input from local pupils.

"They want somewhere that is well maintained and where they feel safe. They want to be able to use the park all year, they want it to be somewhere they can meet friends."

Redcar and Cleveland Partnership chairman Professor Brian Footitt added: "The Great Park could provide a world class facility for the Tees Valley as well as providing a local recreational beauty spot, further enhancing the area for the benefit of all who live in Greater Eston."

Also included in the plans for the Greater Eston area is the £1.2m development at Low Grange and South Bank.

Priorities will be the development of an Eco village at South Bank, with 12 new homes and 20 refurbishments, road improvement works at Low Grange and shop front improvements along Normanby Road.
