FARMERS who want to diversify are being encouraged to apply for funding to convert redundant buildings into art spaces.
According to Ryedale District Council artists are struggling to find studio space and venues where they can hold exhibitions.
And under their Art of the Farm initiative farmers are being urged to rent empty buildings to the artists as a way of diversifying and earning extra income.
Arts and heritage officer Yvette Turnbull said: "We think it would be particularly useful for farmers who perhaps already have a farm shop or a tea room, because we think it would be an extra draw for those farmers if they were to have artists.
"Space may be permanent workspace or the use of an empty barn for a two week exhibition - versatility and variety is the key.
"We think art fresh from the farm could make a real contribution to Ryedale's rural economy."
A similar scheme in Devon has already led to an increase in visitors and if successful in Ryedale the scheme could be introduced in other parts of North Yorkshire.
The cash is being made available by the regional development agency Yorkshire as part of the Rural Development Programme for England - which is funded from Europe and the Government.
A free event to introduce the idea is being held at Beadlam Grange Farm Shop, near Helmsley, on April 27, from 10am to 12.30pm..
Places are limited and farmers wishing to attend should contact Jane Johnson on 01653 600666 ext 213, or email jane.johnson@ryedale.gov.uk
