THE distinctive styles of the 1950s are coming to Thirsk next month.

The town’s World of James Herriot centre is teaming up with Rural Arts to host a special talk on fashion in a decade that saw women reinvent themselves after the war years.

Yorkshire-based History Wardrobe is bringing its 50s talk to the Old Courthouse on May 12.

"For many people the 50s are a living memory not history so they will revel in the nostalgia of this talk," said Herriot centre manager Alison Scurrah.

"For others they can have a look at the bullet bras, sugared petticoats, nylon knickers and liberty bodices that were the rage during this era.

"It was a fascinating decade and this promises to be a fascinating talk."

Tickets - priced at £13 including a drink and nibbles – are available from the Herriot centre on 01845-524234 and Rural Arts on 01845-526536.
