VIKING invaders have stormed the historic city of York to entertain visitors over 1,000 years after they first landed there.

The Nordic warriors headed to York to help to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the famous Jorvik Centre in the city.

The invaders set up camp on the York Museum Gardens over the weekend as they took part of York back in time.

The Vikings built a camp of 30 tents for a two-day living history re-enactment of the period they first arrived in Britain in 866AD.

Visitors were able to try traditional Viking pursuits such as archery, coin striking, embroidery and battle preparations.

Young and old were able to join in and try their hand at Viking life over Saturday and Sunday.

The event was organised by the York Archaeological Trust and Viking re-enactment actors from across the UK travelled to join in.
