A NEW exhibition has opened at an attraction dedicated to the country’s most famous vet.

The show at the World of James Herriot centre in Thirsk highlights favourite places in Yorkshire – including those of vet and author Alf Wight.

His family have provided snaps of some of his haunts – walking on Sutton Bank, visiting Rievaulx with wife Joan, out on his veterinary rounds, and writing in the garden of his Thirsk home.

It also features snaps from a competition to find favourites of local people.

Mark Whyman of Richmond came out as victor with his snap of Gunnerside.

He described it as his favourite place because: "Peace, serenity, majesty and grandeur - Gunnerside Gill offers all these yet its character changes with the seasons and the weather. It is the most photogenic part of the most photogenic dale – Swaledale."

There are also rare originals from the book, "James Herriot – Memories of a Country Vet" and donations from Derry Brabbs who provided all the photography for the book "James Herriot’s Yorkshire."

There will also be a special talk from Derry Brabbs and the author’s son, Jim Wight, on April 17 at 7.39pm..

Tickets for the talk – which cost £8 – are limited, so booking is essential. Call the centre on 01845-524234.
