GREEN campaigners are celebrating their work in preparing for future climate change and dwindling fuel supplies at a special event later this month.

For the past four years members of the Kirkbymoorside Environment Group have been organising events and raise awareness of energy concerns that could affect the local community in the future.

And through their work Kirkbymoorside has now been hailed a "transition town" after proving it was planning ahead for a time without oil and coping with changing weather patterns.

To mark the milestone, the action group is organising a special event, called Springboard Day, with children’s activities, music, talks and information at the Memorial Hall on April 25.

Group member, Stephanie Sanderson, said the group was preparing for future changes affecting transport, food supplies, energy, waste disposal and the local economy.

"Kirkbymoorside is now officially a transition town but this is just the start of a long road ahead. We need to plan for a future when oil supplies are declining and climate change occurs. But we focus on action not words.

"Over the past year we have been working with the local primary school and the wider community to raise awareness of an issue which is critical for the future of the town."

The Springboard Day will begin with a story-making session for children aged between 7 and 11 years-old from 10am to 11.30am.

There will also be a planting session in the town’s Millennium Garden and many other events.
