Karmann the company behind the legendary Karmann Ghia convertible has confirmed it is filing for bankruptcy.

The company became famous in the sixties for its re-bodied VW Beetles which looked similiar to a Porsche but cost a fraction of the price.

Osnabruck-based Karmann said it was working on a re-structing plan in a bid to save itself.

The company's last big project was building the Audi A4 cabriolet.

As well as its much-admired coupe (manufactured from 1951 until 1976) Karmann also engineered the folding steel hard-top roof first seen on the Mercedes SLK.
