PLANS have been lodged for more than 270 homes on the site of a former factory - ten months after a similar, controversial application on the site was withdrawn.

Developers Yuill Homes and Taylor Wimpey have submitted a joint bid to build 273 homes, with garages and gardens, on the former York Trailers site, in Yafforth Road, Northallerton.

Two applications that would have seen a total of 481 homes built in the area - with 331 at York Trailers and an extra 150 at the historic greenfield site Castle Hills - were scrapped in June last year after 27 letters of complaint from residents.

Among the objectors was Northallerton and District Local History Society, which said Castle Hills was the most historically important site in Northallerton and had been occupied since prehistoric times.

The fresh plans, submitted recently to Hambleton District Council, do not include proposals to develop this area.

Plans for the York Trailers element of the development were criticised by Northallerton town councillors, with concerns raised over traffic, sewage and noise from trains on the nearby East Coast mainline.

When the original application was withdrawn last year, Northallerton mayor Tony Hall called on the developers to bring a stand-alone scheme for the York Trailers site to the table.
