WORK is well underway on a new purpose built community centre in Newton Aycliffe to replace the existing wooden building of Agnew Community Association.
The new facility will be a multi-usage community building with one main hall and one smaller meeting room.
It will provide a variety of activities for the local community such as a youth club, after school drop-in, dance music and drama sessions, healthy lifestyle courses and social events including tea dances.
The present Agnew Community Centre was built as a temporary wooden building around 1984 and its poor condition and layout, limits the type of activities which can be provided. The former Sedgefield Borough Council's Local Improvement Programme awarded £264,375 towards the scheme.
