A NINE-year-old girl who suffers from leukaemia has officially opened a village’s new supermarket.

Stephanie Bell was chosen to cut the ribbon at the Tesco Metro, in Langley Moor, near Durham, with store manager Brian Taylor.

The High Street North shop was formerly a branch of Somerfield.

Stephanie was driven to the store in a limousine and afterwards she and her family were taken to Headlam Hall, near Darlington, for pampering.

Tesco also donated £1,000 to the Make a Wish Foundation, which grants wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses.

Mr Taylor said: "The opening was a huge success and I would like to thank everyone who made it so special.

"I’m delighted we could help out with such a deserving charity and Stephanie was a real pro.

"Feedback from customers was very positive."

A fun day with free entertainment for children and a hog roast will be held at the store on Saturday, April 11, between 11am and 4pm.
