A WOMAN who started a skateboarding school two years ago to help keep youngsters fit and off the streets, says it has helped her business beat the credit crunch.

Sarah Agar, who runs Popcorn, a skate clothing and accessories store, in Northallerton, started the class, in Great Smeaton, North Yorkshire, in 2007.

Now she runs classes all over County Durham, Teesside and North Yorkshire.

She said: “We set the school up to entice a new generation of children into skating. The aim was to reach out to those children who, for whatever reason, might not have otherwise thought about skating as a way to get involved and be active.”

The Popcorn Skate School runs classes in Darlington, Redcar and Northallerton, attracting hundreds of youngsters.

Ms Agar said: “It has helped keep the shop alive.

“As an independent retailer, you do not always have the budget to do big television adverts.

“The club has been a lifeline.”
