AS Scots all over the world celebrated Tartan Day yesterday, a lone bagpiper ensured North Yorkshire didn’t miss out.

Ed Arnold player some jaunty north-of-the-border tunes at the National Railway Museum, in York, to promote the Steam Our Scotsman (SOS) appeal.

The museum launched the fund in January with the aim of raising £250,000 to complete the restoration of the Flying Scotsman and bring the loco back into steam.

The public are being invited to sponsor various vital components involved in the overhaul, from a bolt, at £25, to the entire outer firebox, at £100,000.

Mr Arnold, a bagpiper with more than 15 years of experience, said: “The SOS appeal is a fantastic cause and I hope my piping will have helped draw attention to it.”

The museum’s development executive, Louisa Wood, added: “Having a bagpiper on site served as a great way to remind visitors of Flying Scotsman’s Scottish links.”
