An independent organisation campaigning for better rail services have called for the Leamside Rail Line to be re-opened sooner.

Railfuture North East, recently addressed a meeting of Durham’s Transport and Planning Partnership at County Hall. Tony Walker from Railfuture proposed that Network Rail re-open the mothballed line much earlier than planned.

The 21 miles of line links Pelaw to Tursdale which is north of Ferryhill. Residents from Ferryhill have in the past gathered a petition of 16,500 signatures to re-open the line and train station. This was presented to former Pime Minister, Tony Blair.

Network Rail responded saying, “There are other things that are more viable in terms of the business case they present and the value for money that they would give. Network Rail had stated previously that it would look at reinstating the line after 2019.
