THE Forestry Commission have devised the ultimate money saving menu and called it the ‘credit brunch’.

Rangers in Hamsterley Forest, near Bishop Auckland, are staging a spring forager outing to root out natural food and show people how to rustle up tasty and nutritious meals.

At the event on Saturday April 25 they are offering up organic dishes such as hawthorn leaf and spring green salads or nettle soup laced with a dash of wild garlic.

Ranger Neil Taylor said the forest diet was healthy and cheap.

He said: "Basically we have forgotten much of the old wisdom about making the best of nature’s bounty.

"But if you arm yourself with a bit of knowledge it’s amazing just how many foodstuffs could be staring you in the face.

"Most are also jam packed with goodness.

"Wildfood events are usually held in the autumn when the berries ripen, but spring can also be a good time.

"It is important to pick fresh leaves before they grow older and toughen up."

The event starts at Hamsterley Forest Visitor Centre and runs from 1 to 3pm. It costs £5 for adults, £3 concessions and £12 for a family of four. Booking is essential, cal 01388-488312.
