AN MP tested her skills as an oarswoman when she took to the water in a tenmile charity rowing event.

Dr Roberta Blackman- Woods, the Labour MP for Durham City, took to the River Wear on Saturday along with Carolyn Roberts, the headteacher of Durham Johnston School, and members of Durham Amateur Rowing Club.

Dr Blackman-Woods, who was raising money for St Cuthbert’s Hospice and the County Durham Foundation, said she had been doing as much training as she could.

She said: “I am very grateful to the support I have had from local businesses, residents and my fellow MPs. They have helped me raise a lot of money. But I am still anxious to raise even more, so if anybody would like to sponsor me, then please do get in touch. The rowing club have been extremely supportive and gave their time voluntarily to help us train. Their expertise has been invaluable.”
