Middleton Rangers U12's narrowly suffered defeat for the first time in 31 league games against local and league title rivals Spraire Lads by 3 goals to 2.

A strong and lively Spraire side took a 2 -0 lead before half time but Middleton simply refused to crumble and were soon back in it with Joe Abbott slotting the ball home for 2 – 1, following up a Danny Pippen shot. Middleton then levelled the score with a superbly taken goal from in form Bradley Bell.

The comeback appeared to be complete when Middleton slammed the ball in for 3 – 2 with a few minutes to go. However, the referee had other ideas and disallowed the goal for a phantom infringement that only he saw.

No one watching from either side could believe the goal was not to stand and Spraire took complete advantage of Ranger’s misfortune, scoring their third with only seconds left on the clock.

It is rare that a team can take such pride from a game that ends in defeat but this was truly a fantastic performance from the Middleton boys who gave everything that was asked of them, and then more. It was shame they did not get the result they deserved.

The second half saw Joe Abbott complete a fine hat trick, a superb individual goal from man of the match Liam Pollock, two goals from in form Danny Pippen, and a power drive from Robin Hall.

The score could have been a lot higher with Will Hughes and Liam Pollock both hitting the post and probably would have been if not for a fine performance from the Hardwick goalkeeper.

The Rangers strong back line of Mitchell Armin, George Musty, Matty Anderson, and Callum Bensley held firm and was only opened by a Hardwick penalty late in the second half to deny goalkeeper Rory Hunter a clean sheet.

A good start to the game after Rangers won a penalty and Alexander Nelson stepped up as captain to slot it into the net, followed closely by some excellent team passing which saw Caleb Padarariu make it 2-0. The Under 12 Rangers were away at Stockton WE in the Challenge Cup & unfortunately suffered the narrowest of defeats despite outplaying their opponents in what was a tough, physical game.

Rangers immediately took the game to Stockton who are currently flying high in Division 3 & totally dominated the 1st half, creating attack after attack & were desperately unlucky not to be leading at half time, restricting Stockton to only one attempt on goal in which Rory Hunter saved bravely at the striker’s feet.

In the 2nd half Rangers centre backs Matty Anderson & George Musty remained solid and made sure Stockton were kept out while Liam Pollock, Jake Richardson, Luca Dunn, Will Hughes, and Brad Bell worked tirelessly in the midfield to create chances for Middleton against lads that were twice their size, but the breakthrough just would not come for Rangers & extra time beckoned.

Rangers again dominated the 1st period of extra time & were very unfortunate not to get the breakthrough when Luca Dunn & Jake Richardson engineered a fantastic opportunity but the Stockton keeper saved well.

With seconds remaining & penalties approaching Middleton conceded Stockton’s 1st & only corner of the game. A goalmouth scramble followed which saw Stockton scrape the ball over the Rangers line for 1 – 0.

Middleton had lost a game in which they had totally dominated but can take conciliation from a fine performance against a team two divisions higher than them in the TJFA league.
