CHILDREN in West Auckland spent a Spring Clean Day learning about the environment.

Groundwork West Durham organised the event for pupils from Oakley Cross and Copeland Road Primary schools.

Debbie Hibbitts, a waste minimisation and recycling officer with Durham County Council visited Oakley Cross with Joanne Morley, from Groundwork, to present the school with a compost bin and give year three pupils a lesson in items suitable for composting such as kitchen scraps, leaves, paper and tea bags.

Children from Copeland Road were helped to decorate plant pots, plant seeds and carry out litter picks and graffiti walks around West Auckland.

They took photographs of graffiti so that it could be reported to the council’s street cleansing team, who disposed of the bags of litter they collected.

Ms Hibbitts said: "This will help to clean up the area for the children and residents of West Auckland and will educate the pupils about taking pride in their area by helping to keep it clean and tidy.

"Recycling and composting their waste where possible is just one way to help with this."
